Check Popular Over Women Shoes from Birkenstock

After a prolonged period of wearing knee-high boots, there’s nothing our editors and stylists look forward to more (aside from the first dip of the season) than slipping into a pair of comfortable, breathable, and stylish summer sandals. They’re the ultimate warm-weather companion for easy elegance and versatile style.

This season, classic silhouettes like thong finishes and slip-on flats are reigning supreme, trumping trendier styles from years past like platforms and dad slides. What these women’s sandals lack in maximalist, they make up for in elegant details, like the Celine logo embossing and Zimmermann’s ruffle details. (More on that to come.)

With the help of our Private Client stylist, Tiffany Fernandez, we have narrowed down five core silhouettes to carry you through city explorations and beachside dinners.

The Best Minimalist Sandal: Hermès Oran Sandal

There’s a reason why minimalist sandals are a mainstay in our summer wardrobes. Whether you opt for The Row’s new T-strap sandals, which are becoming a new fashion crowd favorite, or the ever-iconic Hermès Oran, these pared-back silhouettes are defined by their sleekness. You can keep it casual by wearing them with dark-wash jeans and tank tops, or dress them up with a summer dress for a more formal occasion. In short, these are the type of summer sandals you always want to have in your hand luggage. Not to mention if you’re a fan of the all-encompassing stealth wealth trend (cue: the Succession theme song), then the Oran’s quiet design is an easy way to get in on this aesthetic.

While the Hermès Oran dates back to 1997, this summer sandal still has the same relevance today as it did 26 years ago. “The Oran remains one of the hottest shoes because Hermès is constantly reinventing it in different colors, prints, and textures,” explains Fernandez, who is always recommending it to clients. Crafted in Italy from calfskin leather, these designer sandals famously hold up through years of wear, elevating even the most simple outfits with their polished exterior and subtle “H” upper.

Hermés comes out with Orans in new textures and colorways each season. So if you’re looking to build out your collection or you are just beginning your Oran journey, these women’s sandals are a great place to start. Discover more minimalist sandals in our full review of the very best pairs.

The Only Strappy Sandal You Need In Your Wardrobe: Khaite Seneca Leather Wedge Sandals

For the stylish dresser on the go, a pair of strappy sandals are a must. Fusing fashionable silhouettes with functional ankle ties, strappy sandals never really go out of style. The beauty of them is the high variety of silhouettes you can find like classic kitten and chunky wedges. What’s more: many of them have adjustable straps, allowing you to run from coffee to brunch without worrying about losing a shoe on the way. If you’re looking for a unique design, we recommend Khaite’s Seneca leather wedge sandals.

“The Khaite Seneca sandal is the cool-girl heel,” notes Fernandez. Similar to Amina Muaddi’s Rihanna approved-shapes, this strappy sandal is a more mature take on the slanted and square heel trend that’s appearing again this season. Its buckle-fastening ensures a secure fit, which is reinforced by the soft Carapetto footbed, and the peep-toe design is the perfect excuse for a pedicure. Looking for something more classic? The Chunky Sandal That Will Carry You From Beach to Dinner: Celine

A pair of slide sandals are a beach outfit essential. Easy to slide on and off, per the name, these are our go-to footwear choice for spontaneous summer days where you’ll find yourself seeing friends for coffee one minute and heading to the shores the next. As much as we love canvas and raffia upper designs (see: Chloé’s logo print silhouette), a leather iteration is your best bet if you want an enduring shoe you can style with anything. A perfect example is Celine’s Clea Triomphe chunky slide, which looks just as elegant with a white summer dress as it does with denim shorts and a tank top.

Celine’s Clea Triomphe slides are the embodiment of simple sophistication. It boasts a soft upper so that you don’t have to worry about chafing while walking. While Fernandez notes that these are a “heavy pair of shoes,” so if you prefer something slightly lighter, the Oran may be a stronger fit. The chunky lug sole does have an up-side though: it allows for multi-terrain wear. Read our Deputy Editor’s full review on the Clea sandal, along with more tried-and-tested designer slides here.

The Ultimate Thong Sandal: Max Mara Platform Leather Sandal

Utilitarian-inspired pieces have been gaining popularity with people looking for functional designs that won’t work against them, but still have a fashionable appearance. This pragmatic shift has brought about renewed interest in thong sandals. Dating back to Ancient Greece, the thong detail ensures they will stay on through days of walking. At the top of our wishlist for this style is Max Mara’s platform thong sandals.

Constructed with an asymmetrical toe-loop and ankle straps, Max Mara’s platform thong sandals will keep you secure no matter where your summer plans take you. Its soft leather upper molds to the shape of your foot for a comfortable fit you can wear time and time again. Functionality gives way to fashionable details with the inclusion of a small platform (nodding to the rise of ’90 shoes again) and a gold-hardware logo made to reflect the sunlight. “I would style these for a European trip with a white dress and a little raffia bag,” says Fernandez.

The Wildcard: Zimmermann Embellished Leather Sandals

Each summer there’s a sandal that captures shoppers’ hearts and effectively becomes the foundation of their warm-weather wardrobes—a good example is Bottega Veneta’s Intrecciato padded slides that dominated our Instagram feeds a few years ago. For myself, this season, it’s Zimmermann’s embellished women’s sandals. Set in an ivory hue and boasting eye-catching ruffles, this summer sandal feels like a natural extension of the romantic details we’re seeing at the moment like rosettes and bows.

Made from 100 percent Italian leather, these ivory sandals are a great finishing touch to your summer outfits. Featuring romantic organza and a square toe, they combine romantic details with contemporary shapes for a shoe that will set you apart this summer. “This is definitely more of a feminine option,” says Fernandez. “I feel like this is perfect for a mature woman who doesn’t like slide silhouettes, and wants support at the back.” Style them with a Ulla Johnson dress for a summer wedding or a pair of tailored trousers and a white blouse for lunch.
